How to Survive a Home Remodel

May 29, 2013

You’re doing a remodeling project on your Porltand home and you’re feeling a little stressed out by the upcoming process. Okay, a lot stressed out. Don’t panic; it happens to the best of us. It’s a big deal; your home is a significant investment and an important part of you. You both deserve the best. Here are two important tips to help you make it through a home remodel and spare you a lot of time and stress:

Lay out a plan.
Know what you want done and when you want it done. Know what materials you need. If you know exactly what you want to do and what you want the end result to look like, that saves tons of time right there. Plan ahead. Set deadlines. It’s never a good idea to risk second-guessing in the middle of a long project. If you’re doing a total remodel but plan on still living in the house, have it done in stages, leaving parts of the house inhabitable the whole time. Preparation, people. Preparation.

Pick the right team.
Make sure to pick the right contractor or group of contractors that will be working on your house. Before you put a team together, interview them. Learn about their history and their references. Decide whom you feel most comfortable with. This will be your “dream team,” and the remodel is the project you’ll all be tackling together. Picking great teammates with skills and experience will make the project go faster, save money, and mean less stress for everyone.
