Benefits of a Mother-in-Law Apartment

June 26, 2013

One trend that is becoming more and more popular in the Portland area is the accessory dwelling unit, more commonly referred to as a “mother-in-law apartment.” In the last few years these living units have sprung up all over the Belmont and Hawthorne neighborhoods of southeast Portland. But what is a mother-in-law apartment exactly? And why are they so important? Good questions!

What is a Mother-in-Law Apartment?

A mother-in-law apartment is a stand-alone living space built on an already existing property. They range from basement, garage and attic units to structures detached from the original house. They are fully functioning living areas complete with kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. (Don’t worry, there are no random mothers-in-law hiding in the closets!)

Benefits of a Mother-in-Law Apartment:

There are a number of benefits of a mother-in-law apartment, including:

  1. Extra income – Mother-in-law apartments are popular with those who can’t afford more expensive housing. Renting out a mother-in-law apartment can help you pay for your existing mortgage or just put a little extra cash in your pocket.
  2. Renters have affordable housing in an attractive neighborhood – Which would you prefer: A seedy downtown studio apartment, or a mother-in-law apartment in a nicer area? It’s a no-brainer.
  3. Adds value to your home – Extra, well-tended living spaces? Your property value will only increase.
  4. Extended family – Have family members visiting? This is the perfect place for them to stay close by. It’s also the perfect place to lock away your annoying mother-in-law. (Just kidding. Don’t do that.)

With mother-in-law apartments, a homeowner only stands to benefit. You can always have space ready for company, or you can earn extra money from tenants. What’s not to love?
